1. Kaniner är inte gnagare – de tillhör en egen familj
Många tror att kaniner är gnagare, men de tillhör faktiskt familjen Leporidae. Det innebär att de är närmare släkt med harar än möss eller råttor. Deras tänder växer dessutom konstant, vilket gör att de måste tugga för att hålla dem i schack.
2. De kommunicerar med öronen
Kaniner har otrolig kontroll över sina öron och kan rotera dem 180 grader. Det är inte bara för hörseln – öronens position visar också hur de känner sig. En kanin med öronen rakt upp är nyfiken, medan bakåtlutade öron ofta betyder ilska eller rädsla.
3. De kan se nästan hela vägen runt sig
Kaniner har ögonen placerade på sidorna av huvudet, vilket ger dem nästan 360 graders synfält. Detta gör att de lätt upptäcker rovdjur – men det gör också att de har en liten blind fläck rakt framför nosen!
4. Deras matsmältning kräver hö
Kaniner behöver obegränsat med hö för att deras tarmar ska fungera korrekt. Hö ger fibrer, förebygger förstoppning och håller tänderna i trim. Pellets och grönsaker är bara komplement.
5. De är tysta – men inte stumma
Även om de inte låter som hundar eller katter, har kaniner sitt eget sätt att göra sig hörda. De kan kurrar av glädje, stampa med bakbenen som varning, eller till och med morra när de är arga.
6. Kaniner älskar sällskap
Kaniner är sociala djur och mår ofta bäst tillsammans med en artfrände. En ensam kanin kan bli deprimerad, även om den får mycket mänsklig kontakt.
7. De kan bli gamla
Med rätt vård kan tamkaniner leva mellan 8 och 12 år, ibland ännu längre. Det är viktigt att förstå det långsiktiga ansvaret innan man skaffar en kanin.
8. De kan tränas!
Många blir förvånade över att kaniner kan gå på låda, komma på inkallning och lära sig tricks. Belöning och tålamod är nyckeln – precis som med hundar.
9. Kaniner kräver aktivering
Kaniner behöver minst 2–4 timmars fri rörelse varje dag utanför sin bur. De älskar att hoppa, gräva och utforska, så se till att hemmet är säkrat mot sladdar och växter.
10. Deras bajs säger mycket
Kaniner bajsar mycket – och det är ett tecken på god hälsa. De producerar också cecotrofer, en mjuk typ av avföring som de äter direkt från rumpan för att tillgodogöra sig extra näring. Låter konstigt, men det är helt naturligt!
